The Portland Foundation has approved grants of $164,473 from unrestricted funds and $8,453 from field of interest funds for 19 Jay County projects for the first half of 2008.   Those grants are as follows:

American Red Cross, Hoosier Heartland Chapter

$5,000 on a $1 for $1 matching grant towards the outfitting of an Emergency Response Vehicle for Jay County.  Of this, $314 comes from the 1776 Fund, which supports emergency response organizations.

Arts Place, Inc.

$45,000 for operating support and $10,000 from the Abromson-Fleming Memorial Trust for support of the Abromson Visual Arts Chair.

Dunkirk Beautification Committee

$1,450 to underwrite three concerts in the Webster Park Depot Concert Series.

Jay Community Center

$30,000 for operating support.

Jay Community Center

$1,432 for funding of a senior citizens program at the center.  $50 is from the Paul and Velma Beard Trust, $900 is from the Green-Saffer Fund for the Elderly, $265 from the Cincinnatus League Endowment, and $217 from the Joseph Vormohr Fund, all of which benefit elderly citizens.

Jay County 4th of July Committee

$6,000 for the 4th of July celebration.

Jay County Fair Association

$10,000 for a chain link fence on the south side of the fairgrounds.  Of this, $930 comes from the Fund For a More Attractive Community, which supports the beautification of Portland.

Jay County Historical Society

$3,596 for roof renovation and installation of water line for the Society’s Heritage Festival.  The funding comes from the Clyde E. Geeting Memorial Trust, which provides funding for historical facilities.

Jay County Special Olympics

$2,500 for entry fees for Jay County Special Olympians.  Of this, $215 comes from the Jean Leslie Jaqua Trust, which supports handicapped children.

Jay Patriot Band Boosters

$3,944 for the purchase of an instrument and voice amplification system for the Jay County High School Marching Band.

Jay-Randolph Developmental Services

$5,000 for the renovation of the Life Skills Training Kitchen and Basic Life Skills Activity Center.  Of this, $1,966 comes from the Robert and Frances Gillespie Fund, which benefits handicapped individuals.

John Jay Center For Learning

$30,000 for operating support.

Museum of the Soldier

$2,542 for promotional brochures.

Purdue Extension Service of Jay County

$2,500 for the implementation of “Exploring My Pyramid with Professor Popcorn” program with Jay County schools.

Redkey Community Center

$5,000 for repairs to the community center and to purchase new tables and chairs for the center.

Redkey Junior League

$2,300 for the purchase of a refrigerator/freezer.

Redkey Optimist Club, Inc.

$2,662 for the purchase of snowcone and popcorn machines and a portable movie projector screen.

Second Harvest Food Bank

$2,000 for the Tailgate food distribution program

West Jay Community Center

$2,000 for installation of a window between the gymnasium and fitness room.

The grant application deadline for the 2008 Winter Cycle is January 7, 2009 by 5:00 p.m.
