Scholarships - Summer Cycle
The Foundation has a limited number of scholarships available during the Summer Cycle. Applications may be picked up at the Foundation office, 112 East Main St., Portland. Completed applications must be received in the office by 5 p.m. on the deadline date listed below. We offer two scholarship cycles per year. Refer to the Winter Grants page for the next winter cycle deadline.

Summer Scholarship Opportunities
Altrusa Club Scholarship
Awarded to a non-traditional female student enrolled in a degree-seeking program.
Janet B. Arnold Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2006 by Richard D. Arnold as a memorial to his wife and her life as an educator. This scholarship is for Jay County High School graduates who are entering their junior or senior year of college and majoring in education.
Dr. Ara C. and Gay B. Badders Medical Scholarship
Offered to Jay County students seeking a doctoral degree in a medical field. Dr. Badders was a physician in Jay County for many years, while Mrs. Badders was a school teacher. This scholarship is for $2,000 per semester for up to six semesters.
Ruth Whipple-Badders Scholarship
Established in 2007 by Patricia S. McKinley. This scholarship is for Jay County High School graduates who are entering their junior or senior year of college and majoring in education.
Alwin A. Carder Scholarship
Established in 2004 by the last will and testament of Alwyn A. Carder. Renewable for up to 4 semesters at $750 per semester (Junior and Senior years only). Scholarship candidates must be majoring in architecture, history, or education and have a grade point average of 2.5 or better.
Marseal T. DeWeerd, Edith T. Horn, and Virgie M. Brady Memorial Scholarship
Established in August, 2001 by the last will and testament of Marseal T. DeWeerd. Renewable for up to 4 semesters at $200 per semester. All Jay County residents who are Juniors or Seniors in college are eligible to apply, however preference will be given to residents of Penn township, Indiana per the wishes of Ms. DeWeerd.
John Jay Center for Learning
Established in 2004 by the Board of Trustees of The Portland Foundation. These $500 scholarships are awarded to Jay County residents attending classes through John Jay Center for Learning. These students may be taking classes on a full-time or part-time basis and be enrolled in a degree-seeking program.
Pennville Church of Christ Scholarship
Established in 2007 by the Pennville Church of Christ. The fund is to provide scholarships to residents of Jay County, Indiana pursuing a higher education degree.
