Congratulations to the 2009 Lilly Endowment Scholarship Recipients

Two Jay County High School seniors have been named to receive full-tuition, four-year scholarships as The Portland Foundation's 2009 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars.

Adam Garringer is the son of Carmen Garringer and Mike Garringer and resides in Portland. He plans to attend Hanover University and study business. Adam is ranked #13 in his class with a 3.98 GPA. He is a member of the National Honor Society, basketball team (where he was varsity captain), football team, golf team, Jay Today Staff, student council, Youth for Christ, and is a senior mentor.

Mason Murphy is the son of Mitch and Anna Murphy and lives in rural Bryant. He plans to attend Notre Dame University and study biological sciences. Mason is ranked #1 in his class with a 4.03 GPA. He is a member of the National Honor Society and FFA where he received his state degree, was co-chair of the recruitment committee, and served on the soil judging team. He is also a member of Campus Life, German Club, Key Club, student council, wrestling team, junior leaders, and boy's state. He is a National Merit Scholar semi-finalist, a Bausch and Lomb Science Award recipient, and president of the student exchange club. 

 

Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships

The Portland Foundation will participate in the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for 2010. Applications may be picked up at the guidance office at Jay County High School in December, 2009. Or you may download a copy by clicking on this link download application.

Please turn in the application to the Foundation office, 112 East Main St., Portland by:

January 5, 2010 by 5 p.m.

  • The scholarship will provide full tuition, required fees for up to 4 years of full-time, undergraduate study leading to a baccalaureate degree at any Indiana public or private college or university accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. An allocation of up to $800 per year for books and equipment is also included.  
  • The program is open to all members of the Class of 2010 who are Jay County residents and have graduated from an accredited Indiana high school.  
  • The scholarship applicant must have been accepted to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study in the fall of 2010.  
  • The scholarship applicant must have a minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.
  • The scholarship applicant must complete and submit the application on or before January 5, 2010 to The Portland Foundation, 112 East Main Street, Portland, IN 47371  
  • The Portland Foundation will submit nominees to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) in Spring 2010, who will make the final selection of the scholarship recipient(s).
