Introducing the 2008 Lilly Scholarship Recipients

Two Jay County High School students have been named to receive full, four-year scholarships as The Portland Foundation's 2008 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars.

KALEB HEMMELGARN is the son of Doug and Karen Hemmelgarn and lives in rural Portland. He plans to attend Wabash College and pursue a major in Economics. He was ranked #10 in his class of 247 with a 3.968 GPA.

Kaleb was a member of the National Honor Society, FFA, a 10-year member of 4-H, Junior Fair Board, First Merchants Senior Advisory Board. He played football for four years and in 2007 was All Conference, All State, Academic All State, and Team Captain. He was Offensive Player of the Year in 2006 & 2007.

LEE HAGGENJOS is the son of Dr. Mark & Donna Haggenjos and resides in rural Portland. He plans to attend Notre Dame University in South Bend and study Biology and Music. Lee was ranked #1 in his class of 247 with a 4.095 GPA.

Lee was a member of the National Honor Society, Academic Team, Junior Classical League, Student Council and Thespian Society. He was section leader and first chair in the band where he was outstanding underclassman in 2006 and 2007. He was vice-president of the Senior class and participated in several plays. Lee has studied classical guitar at Arts Place for several years and plays in a rock band.

 

Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships

The Portland Foundation will participate in the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for 2009. Applications can be picked up at the guidance office at Jay County High School in December, 2008.  If you would like an electronic version, please email Kent McClung at kmcclung@portlandfoundation.org or Pam Rogers at progers@portlandfoundation.org.

Please turn in the application to the Foundation office, 112 East Main St., Portland by:

January 7, 2009 at 5 p.m.

  • The scholarship will provide full tuition, required fees for up to 4 years of full-time,  undergraduate study leading to a baccalaureate degree at any Indiana public or private college or university accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. An allocation of up to $800 per year for books and equipment is also included.  
  • The program is open to all members of the class of 2009 who are Jay County residents and have graduated from an accredited Indiana high school.  
  • The scholarship applicant must have been accepted to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study in the fall of 2009.  
  • The scholarship applicant must have a minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.
  • The scholarship applicant must complete and submit the application on or before January 7, 2009 to: The Portland Foundation, 112 East Main Street, Portland, IN 47371  
  • The Portland Foundation will submit nominees to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) in Spring 2009, who will make the final selection of the scholarship recipient(s).
